(1530-1578) After a brief civil war with his brother, Nagao Kagetora came to control the Nagao clan in Echigo province. Fortune smiled on him when Uesugi Norimasa asked for Nagao's protection from Hojo. Kagetora accepted, but only on the condition that Norimasa make Kagetora the Uesugi heir and granted him the title of Kanto Kanrei. Later, he came to be known as Uesugi Kenshin, the Dragon of Echigo. Kenshin was well respected both as a politician, and as a military leader. He was particularly respected by Takeda Shingen, who fought him five times at Kawanakajima.
