Look & Feel
Battles
- 3D terrains allow you to watch the battle from many angles.
- 5 unit types with historical Japanese uniforms, weapons, flags, and accessories enrich the cultural backdrop. The unit types are Samurai (Swordsmen), Spearmen, Archers, Cavalry, and Riflemen.
- 37 unique castles based on historical Japanese castles, making very realistic fortifications.
- 12 Historical Army Formations based on Japanese history. You can evolve your army formation in response to the current battle situation in real time.
- Weather effects like fog, rain, and snow influence the outcome of the battle. Heavy fog can create a “fog of war” effect in battle mode, so that an army would have little or no intelligence about the enemy army’s numbers, strength, and position. Rain makes rifles hard to fire.
- Choose the attack time: Attacking at dawn increases the chance of fog, which can be used to cover your charging cavalry. Natural lighting changes corresponding to the time of day.
- Soldiers act human. Fear, fatigue, and morale affect their battle performance.
- Chain of Command effect means the leader influences the performance of his subordinates.
- Battle replay allows the player to review success or failure.
- Multiplayer option lets the player to compete against a friend.
Outside of Battle
- Historical characters from 16th century Japan each have biographical descriptions and individually-drawn portraits from Taiwanese artists. Statistical qualities like age, leadership, and intelligence are based on the historical character. These statistics improve with battle experience and/or other modifiers, and also affect gameplay. There are over 600 historical characters in the game with 240 unique portraits.
- Castle facilities and management can be improved to increase production rates. First, assign a competent governor, so that his leadership abilities contribute to the castle. You can also build facilities to improve specific aspects of castle production and ability. Some facilities, such as rifle houses and river banks, can only be assigned at particular locations. The castle facilities are:
- Barracks: Increases the maximum number of soldiers for this castle by 200.
- Church: Doubles teppo (rifle) house production and reduces the cost of teppo purchases.
- Farm: Generates +50 Koku of rice per turn.
- Foreign District: Allows foreigners to visit. Each Foreign District adds a 20 percent chance to the probability of a foreigner (missionary) visiting your capital.
- Granary: Increases maximum Koku of rice for this castle by 200.
- Marketplace: Creates a trade line for castle. Each marketplace adds a 20 percent chance of a merchant visiting. Also improves gold generation.
- Ninja House: Training ground for your ninjas to gain experience.
- Remote Tower: Prevents this castle from being sieged.
- River Bank: Doubles the farm production.
- Stable: Increases Cavalry generation by +10 per turn.
- Temple: Boosts the initial morale of this castle’s armies.
- Teppo (Rifle) House: Increases teppo production by +2 per turn.
- Town: Improves army recruitment rate by +25 soldiers per turn.
- Ninjas can be used to assassinate leaders, spy on foreign clans, sabotage castles, and trick enemy armies. There are also four additional special ninjas that have unique abilities: Corruptor, Bodyguard, Elite Assassin, and Master Teacher. The player may choose only one of these special ninjas per game, which means the player can replay the game with a different choice to see its effect on the outcome.
- Social Ranking is the class system in feudal Japan that bestowed privileges and power to individuals of a higher rank. The title of Shogun means that the character receives the maximum popularity, leadership, governing, and division size bonuses.
- Special events give the player opportunities to change their fate. Appeasing beggar peasants increases the Daimyo’s popularity, and horse and rifle merchants allow the player to increase their cavalry and riflemen reserves.
- Diplomacy needs to be used in addition to battle successes to carry out the campaign. The player can make or break alliances, make or break treaties, or declare war on other clans. The friendliness between two clans is influenced by their relationship with other clans, so that “the friend of my enemy is my enemy”. Each change in relationship between two clans can cause a chain reaction across all clans and drastically change the overall situation.
- Marriages can be used to improve the friendship between two clans.
- Special items can be equipped by historical characters for additional stat bonuses.
