Although it is one of the oldest continuous civilizations in human history, China did not always exist as a single nation. At the same time that the great empires of the West were being born, China was composed of several small kingdoms. The ruler of one of these kingdomsYing Zheng, of Qinenvisioned a plan to unite the entire country into a single Empire... under his own rule, of course. Ying Zheng amassed his army and proceeded to conquer every kingdom that stood in his way. After a bloody onslaught, he finally succeeded in creating a single nation under heaven; and renamed himself Shihuangtifirst God-Emperor of China

Ying Zheng
Ying Zheng ascended the throne when he was 13. He embarked on the campaign which would eventually complete the great wall, and unify all of China under a single government, currency, and language. But he was a brutal dictator. The suffering caused by his unification wars was enormous, and Ying Zheng attempted to force the Legalist philosophy on the people by executing scholars and burning books.

Kao-Tzu
Born a peasant, Liu Bang was a minor official during the collapse of the Qin dynasty. In 202 BC, amidst the chaos, he managed to seize the throne and become ruler of China. He first worked to rebuild the crumbling empire and solidify his power against nomads and bandits. Eventually, he expanded the country into the south, built a new capital at Chang-an, and re-organized the nation into 13 provinces.
